What makes a good title tag
The title tag is the strongest on-page signal you control, and it is the first thing a searcher reads. A good one does three jobs: it contains the words people search for, it promises something specific, and it fits on one line.
- Put the keyword near the start. People scan the first few words, and Google bolds words that match the search.
- Stay under about 580 pixels. On desktop, Google cuts titles at roughly 600 px and adds “…”. That is usually 50–60 characters, but a title full of wide letters like W and M runs out sooner. The meter above measures the real width in Arial, the font Google uses.
- Make it specific. “Cast Iron Skillet Care: Clean, Season and Store” beats “Cast Iron Tips”. Numbers, years and clear outcomes earn clicks when they are true.
- Put your brand last, or leave it out. On a long title, the brand is the first thing worth trimming. Google often shows your site name above the title anyway.
- Use a unique title on every page. Duplicate titles make it hard for Google to choose which page to show.
Why Google sometimes changes your title
Since 2021, Google may replace a title it thinks is too long, stuffed with keywords, or a poor match for the page, often using the page’s main heading (H1) instead. The best protection is a title that honestly describes the page and agrees with your H1. If Google keeps rewriting one, read the words it chose: they show how Google understands the page.
How the title ideas work
The ideas are built from proven headline patterns (guide, how-to, beginner, comparison and “explained” formats) using your keyword, angle and brand. Nothing is sent to an AI or a server. Treat them as starting points: pick the closest one, click Use, then edit it until it sounds like you.
How to use the Meta Title Generator
- Type your main keyword, an optional angle and your brand name.
- Click Use on the idea you like best, then edit it in the Page title box.
- Keep the meter green and paste the title tag into your page or SEO plugin.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a title tag be?
Aim for up to about 580 pixels, which is usually 50–60 characters. Google measures titles in pixels, so the meter is more reliable than a character count.
Is the title tag the same as the H1?
No. The title tag appears in search results and browser tabs; the H1 is the main heading on the page. They should agree, but the title can be shorter and include your brand.
Should every page have a different title?
Yes. Unique titles help Google understand each page and help searchers pick the right result.
